Balance Scales

Balance scales are an age old way of taking measurement of the weight of an object. They system has been around for hundreds of years and the concept remains the same today. They are not as common as they once were, now we have newer, easier way of measuring an objects weight, but the idea is still sound. They are still however prevalent in today's society, most in a symbolic sense. They are often used to denote balance in some way, be it fairness, justice, karma etc. They are also used to depict Libra, one of the12 signs of the zodiac.

Using Balance Scales

The use of balance scales is very straightforward and easy. They are essentially a horizontal beam, with a central pivot point. From each end of the beam, there is a pan, or attachment device that allows you to place the object being weighed. Generally, you would place the object to be weighted on one side then gradually add marked weights to the other. Once the scales swung and were even, you counted the weights you placed on the other side and that would be the rough weight of the object. Although considered highly accurate years ago, these days, there are issues. Perhaps the weights are dirty, a few .01s of a gram of dirt may throw off you measurement if you are using many weights. Perhaps the pivot point is stiff? This may throw off the accuracy of your reading also.

Learning Devices

They are often used in schools to teach pupils about various subjects. They are well used in teaching gravity, explaining the concept of weight. They also lend themselves well to mathematics. Pupils having to count the number of weights on the other side of the scale to total the weight of the object being weighed. They are a fun and physically interactive way of teaching, this greatly helps the information sink into enquiring minds.

Usage

If you decide to purchase balancing scales for actual home use; there are a few important things to remember. First of all, you may need to apply oil to the pivot occasionally. This keeps the motion free, allowing more accurate measurement of weight. Ensure you keep your set of weights free from dirt and grime as this can potentially skew any results you get. When in use, try to keep the balancing scales on a hard and flat surface, this will give you a more accurate reading and prevent the scales themselves toppling over. When purchasing, also look at what you will be using it to measure. If it is small items, such as jewellery etc, a small set of scales will be fine. If it is large items, such as ingredients for cooking, it may be wise to opt for food scales instead.

Alternatives

In these modern times, you are perhaps better served purchasing a set of digital weighing scales. They are generally cheaper, more accurate, easier to use and more stable. There is however a certain charm to using old fashioned balancing scales and if they suit your needs, they will put smile on your face every time you use them. Also, if they are large enough, they ad a classical touch as an ornament in any room, with all their symbolic history.
